  • From August 2015

      To July 2016

According to UNICEF in 2013, 3.7 million children aged 1 month to 5 years died due to various diseases. India's child mortality rate has dropped by more than half since 1990 but it still recorded the world's highest number of deaths among children below age five in 2013, a United Nations report said, acknowledging the progress made by the world's second most populous nation. The report, 'Levels and Trends in Child Mortality 2014', found that India registered 1.34 million under-five deaths in 2013, the highest in the world.2 Acute respiratory infections (ARIs) are the leading cause of death among children less than 5 years in India. ARIs are the major cause of mortality among children aged less than 5 years especially in developing countries. Worldwide, 20% mortality among children aged less than 5 years is attributed to respiratory tract infections.
