Due to the significance attached to work in modern society - a means of achieving recognition and economic and social status - the retirement process can influence emotional and social dimensions, impairing the functionality of retired people. [1]For people over 60 years of age, this can lead to health problems, depending on the work conditions, educational standards, education level, and job opportunities. Furthermore, it must be considered that the changes involved in the aging process are inevitable and occur naturally through physiological and biological factors, although they can also be pathological when disease is involved.[1]
The increased social seclusion of retirement can restrict physical activity, impairing mobility, which accelerates the aging process and increases the incidence of chronic disease. All such changes make retirees less adaptable. People who enter retirement without proper preparation cannot deal with the “excess” free time, which leads to feelings of uselessness.[2]While retiring can be a reward for years of hard work, it can also trigger anxiety, depression, and impact quality of life.
Faced with the upheaval that retirement can cause and its impact on lifestyle and health, the objective of this study is to determine the effects of retirement on quality of life and mood among older adults.
