"Manufacturing activities worldwide are facing several challenges due to globalization which demands on productivity, reliability, and product quality. The CAD/CAM/CIM techniques focus on the automation and integration of product cycle activities such as design, analysis, planning, production, and inspection to compress product development lead time. Additive manufacturing technologies are positioned to provide a disruptive transformation in how products are designed and manufactured. Work on manufacturing systems uses the techniques of Industrial Engineering (IE) to plan, model, and optimize systems, addressing the issues of the supply chain, logistics, and resource utilization. Recent trends in Industry-4.0/ Smart manufacturing added a new dimension to product development activities. Worldwide,industries are realizing the need for interconnected cyber-physical systems (CPS). Industry-4.0 technologies such as Cloud Computing, Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data Analytics are being used in the manufacturing and supply chain to improve the overall performance.

With sustainability being a major issue worldwide, techniques of Artificial Intelligence (AI)/ Machine Learning (ML) are being applied for intelligent product development environments. These contemporary Manufacturing Systems must integrate these multi-disciplinary concepts for sustainable product development."
